I've had various game consoles growing up that we received as gifts from other family members and because these consoles were the few expensive things our family owned, they became very special to my brother and I and we spent hours of our days playing video games. I haven't lost interest in video games but over the years I did start playing it less because I developed hobbies of my own, my brother and I stopped hanging out and because I would only play video games with him, I didn't like playing by myself. I still don't really like playing games by myself and I'll always try to encourage my sister or my boyfriend to play with me. I also enjoy watching gameplays on youtube especially for horror games or action games.

I unfortunately no longer have most of the consoles that I grew up with because they either broke or my dad decided to give them away to my relatives from across the sea (still pissed about that).

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

The NES is Nintendo's third console released after Color TV-Game (1977) and Famicon (1983). The NES was released in the US in 1985 and was basially the same as the Famicon except for a few visual changes and some slight system differences. It homed the first ever mario game, Mario Bros and Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Duck Hunt etc. The console became very popular in Japan and in the United States and became one of the best selling consoles to ever exist and to this day it's still popular for individuals who enjoy retro games. It was discontinued in North America in 1995.

I had a Sony Trinitron that sat on my dresser and my brother connected our NES to it. I remember we would sit on my bed while playing or we would stand if a level was getting too hard. Weirdly enough, I don't remember exactly how my parents got us the NES because all my siblings and I were born after 2000 (years after discontinuation) and I can't imagine that two bengali immigrants who worked 10-14 hours a day would get a Nintendo Entertainment System for themselves, let alone know what it is. I think consoles are still sold after discontinuation, maybe at thrift stores or those little shops in Montreal that sold old tech + pirated movies/shows. Some of the shops were run by men that my dad knew from back in Bangladesh, and that's where we bought the Mario Bros game cartidge.

I never played the NES by myself because I was terrible at video games so it wasn't fun when I kept failing a level, I also didn't know how to turn the system on or connect it to the TV. At some point my brother and I stopped playing with the NES because we got our first handheld consoles which was the gameboy advance SP. We didn't touch the NES or the little Sony trinitron for a while and eventually as years went on and my family upgraded our TV, the trinitron was tucked into our basement and the NES disappeared off the face of the earth. My dad threw our little TV later on and so I think he threw out our NES as well. I'm not hurt by that because although it's one of my first introduction to video games, I don't think I would play it at all. The last time my brother and I used it would have been the last time regardless if I had it with me.

Games I owned

Super Mario Bros

A platform game published for the NES and the very first game in the Super Mario series!! My brothers favourite game at the time and he was really good at it. I was always Luigi.

Duck Hunt

This was my favourite one! My little brain exploded every single time I shot a duck because how did my TV know I was pointing a gun at it. I really miss this game and I was I still had the NES.
